Healthy Living at any Age

After: Two Years later and 26 pounds lighter following a Low Carb High Fat diet or Live it as I like to call it.

After 45 I started to gain weight.  Most of my life I followed a "healthy" diet, mostly plant based but enjoying a steak on occasion.  Watching my weight was not really a problem as long as I didn't eat lots of garbage food but after 45 everything I ate went to my stomach and spread out from there.

I tried weight watchers, vegetarian, and even vegan diets to try to maintain a healthy weight and one problem followed all of them, I was always hungry.  The feeling of being deprived was overwhelming so much so that I had a running joke about the Vegan lifestyle I adopted and that was I was a slutty Vegan because sometimes I would crave meat so badly I gave in.

What I didn't know then but understand now is that these cravings and over eating binges were because my body was needing more nutrition than I was getting and that they encouraged my addiction to Sugar.

Sugar is an addictive product that is a powerful as being addicted to Cocaine but much more socially acceptable because its in everything.  If you don't think it is, start reading the labels of your packaged or processed food in your kitchen.  This has become more prevalent when they took the fat out of food.

High Fat Low Carb or The Ketogenic Diet

I decided I really needed to loose weight but needed help.  I chose to go to a Naturopath doctor because my research showed that the average General Practitioner doctor gets about 3 hours of nutrition training.  I expected her to guide me on a more balanced Vegetarian diet than I was following and to my surprise she told me to eat fat, meat, selected fresh vegetables and fruit and to count my Carbohydrates not calories.

It took me a few weeks to get my head around this but once I really embraced this way of eating,
slowly and steadily the pounds dropped off.   I wasn't easy because I had to go through sugar withdraw and I felt like crap.  I felt sick and the craving for sugar was at times unbearable.  I wanted to quit.  

It lasted about 2 weeks and then like magic it was gone.   I felt clearer and more focused mentally than I had felt in years.    In two weeks I had dropped 7 pounds.

Now my start weight was 143 pounds which some of you may say that's not bad but I am only 5 ft 1" so not much space for it to spread out and I was getting fatter every month.  

After two weeks I was down to 135 pounds.  The next several months I lost steadily about a pound a month and I am never hungry and often only eat twice a day.

Currently I am at 117 pounds and feel I need to be at 110 pounds which is the recommended weight for my size but I'm in no rush because this is (like Yoga) a process of returning to optimum health.
